Every installation begins with a fireplace and chimney inspection to confirm the firebox is in safe condition and properly sized for the log set you choose.
What's Included — Starting at $499
Vented vs. Vent-Free Gas Logs
Vented Gas Logs
- Most realistic flame appearance — closest to a wood fire
- Damper stays open during use — some heat exits up the chimney
- Requires a functioning chimney in serviceable condition
- Damper clamp required to prevent accidental closure
- No local code restrictions in most municipalities
- Best choice if the visual experience matters most
Vent-Free Gas Logs
- Maximum heat output — all heat stays in the room
- Damper stays closed — no chimney draw required
- Oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) required for safety
- Produces some moisture and combustion byproducts indoors
- Check local codes — some Cook & Lake county municipalities restrict vent-free
- Best choice if heat output is the priority
Not sure which is right for your home? GEM will walk you through the trade-offs during the inspection and help you choose based on your fireplace, home, and priorities.
Safety Note: Gas Log Installation Is Not a DIY Project
Gas log installation is not a DIY project. Proper installation requires correct clearances between the log set and firebox walls, a damper clamp on vented systems (to prevent the damper from closing accidentally while the logs are in use), a gas line connection with pressure testing, and a full leak check before the system is operated. Vent-free systems additionally require a functioning oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) and must comply with local building codes — some municipalities in Cook and Lake counties have restrictions on vent-free appliances. GEM handles all of this as part of the installation.
Our Installation Process
Fireplace and Chimney Inspection
Before any gas log is installed, we inspect the firebox and flue to confirm the fireplace is structurally sound, properly sized, and safe for gas log use. For vented systems, the chimney must be in serviceable condition. We document the inspection in a written report.
Log Set Sizing
Gas log sets must be sized to fit your firebox correctly — too large and they won't clear the firebox walls; too small and the flame pattern looks wrong. We measure your firebox and recommend the right set for your space and heat output needs.
Gas Line Connection
We connect the log set to your existing gas supply line (or extend the line to the fireplace if needed). All connections are made with proper fittings and tested for leaks before the system is operated.
Leak Testing and Safety Check
Every installation includes a full leak test of all gas connections and a safety check of the log set, burner, and controls. Vented systems get a damper clamp installed. Vent-free systems get an ODS sensor check.
Operation Walkthrough
We walk you through operating the system — lighting, adjusting the flame, using the remote or thermostat controls if installed, and what to do if you ever smell gas. You leave knowing exactly how your new system works.
