Mortar joints are the most vulnerable part of any masonry chimney. They absorb water, expand and contract with temperature changes, and gradually erode over time. Tuckpointing — the process of removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar — is the most effective way to stop water infiltration and extend the life of your chimney. Severely deteriorated mortar joints allow water to saturate the masonry core. In winter, that water freezes and expands, causing spalling brick faces and eventually structural instability. A chimney with loose or missing bricks is a falling hazard. Tuckpointing before this stage is far less expensive than brick replacement or a partial rebuild.
What Is Tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing involves carefully grinding out the deteriorated mortar from between the bricks to a depth of about 3/4 inch, then packing in fresh mortar that matches the original in composition, color, and texture. Done correctly, tuckpointing is nearly invisible — the repaired joints blend seamlessly with the surrounding masonry. Done incorrectly (with the wrong mortar type or color), it can actually accelerate damage by trapping moisture.
Mortar joints are designed to be sacrificial — they're softer than the brick and absorb the stress of thermal movement and moisture. When mortar erodes, water enters the joint, freezes in winter, and expands — accelerating the erosion and eventually causing brick damage. Tuckpointing at the right time (when mortar is eroded but brick is still sound) is far less expensive than waiting until the brick itself is damaged and needs replacement.

Tuckpointing in the Chicago Area: What You Need to Know
The Chicago area's freeze-thaw cycle is one of the most aggressive in the country for masonry deterioration. Each winter, water that has infiltrated mortar joints freezes and expands, widening the joint and forcing the mortar out. Over 20–30 cycles per winter, this process is relentless. We see chimneys in the northwest suburbs where mortar joints that were sound 10 years ago are now recessed 1/2 inch or more — well past the point where tuckpointing is needed.
Expert Tip from GEM
Run your finger along the mortar joints on your chimney's exterior (from the ground, use binoculars). If the mortar is recessed more than 1/4 inch below the brick face, or if you can scrape it out with a key, it's time for tuckpointing. Waiting until the mortar is completely gone means the brick itself will start to deteriorate — a much more expensive repair.

Mortar analysis
